The project began by sharpening the sense of hearing
so you could hear the simple melody that is hidden in the chanting tones
of the monks. Reading of the sutras does sound like music though on its
own, it really is not considered as such. But once the beats and chords
are put together by a computerized synthesizer, the melody manifests and
becomes UTTARA-KURU music. The reason the UTTARA-KURU sounds give an impression
of being deeply profound and visionary could be because the cosmic consciousness
held by the Buddhist religion is embodied in the voices of the monks. Also
the power that overflows from each piece could be due to the strong respect
UTTARA-KURU holds for Buddhism.
For UTTARA-KURU music, dividing into genres
by terms like techno, house, new age, world music has no meaning. Because
in order to express emotions and experiences that words cannot really express,
they have come to face the traditions that have been handed down by the
Japanese culture and they face the synthesizer, as well.
The first album by UTTATA-KURU, PRAYER",
will surely build for them a quick and deeply sacred relationship with
the listner no matter what the mother language, and no matter what cultural
background the listner may come from.
